Improved rank calculation
Posted by Marijn - Friday January 7 @ 22:18
Cat: Net-ForceWe've adjusted the calculation of the numeric ranks. Now, you will have a higher rank when you finish a challenge earlier than the other people with the same number of solved challenges.

In the past the ranks were only based on the number of solved challenges and the registration date of a user.

We're still thinking about a better system and better rank names. Good ideas are always welcome!

good job ;)

this does make more sence ;)

otherwise you could just save paswds and create a new account to improve rank.

My idea is a ranking system consisting of two parts:

-A part that automatically gives a member a higher rank when solving challenges and posting articles.

-A part that makes part of the admin panel, where admins can improve the rank of a member. This can happen when members help other members good in the forum, or when they submit good articles.
It's very important that this not goes automatically, to keep te forum and library clean from crap.

In my eyes there are always members that jump out of the rest, they help other members well, etc. And I don't think this can be detected automatically.

i don't like the scheme proposed by wousiej.

ranking people for "helping people in the forum" is not only a terrible strange on Marijn's mailbox, and just plain subjective, it also isn't a good criteria imho:
nf is about solving puzzles and challenges, not about making yourself popular on the boards

posting articles could be considered, but i don't really see the benifit in that. there are special ranks for helping Marijn out (in various ways ;-) )

Why don't you give points for each challenge (how harder a challenge is, how higher the points) and then calculate the sum of the points.
e.g.
Javascript:
Challenge 1: 100 pts
Challenge 2: 200 pts
Challenge 3: 300 pts
...

Only problem is that who's gonna decide wich challenge is harder than an other...

hmm, no edit button.
You still should first rank on how many challenges are solved, and then look at the total score...

That's not all true, nf is a community and in a community people should help each other. :)

Second, if you are only look to solved challenges and posted articles, you give all that fucking n00bs the chance to become in a high rank, what they do not deserve. I had several times messages in my inbox, with the subject in the category "what is the password of this?" or "can you explain me all the javascript challs?, that's easier for me." and stuff like that. Members that are populair on the boards, help other members well, etc are in my eyes the members that deserve a high rank.

"That's not all true, nf is a community and in a community people should help each other. :)"

helping should be its own reward...:)

"Second, if you are only look to solved challenges and posted articles, you give all that fucking n00bs the chance to become in a high rank, what they do not deserve."

you fail to give an argument in this sentence. please rephrase and explain why, noobs could solve challenges and post articles, yet not help people in forums?

"I had several times messages in my inbox, with the subject in the category "what is the password of this?" or "can you explain me all the javascript challs?, that's easier for me." and stuff like that."

So? fail to see the relevance of this in the current discussion, unless i am mistaken nobody of higher rank replies to those messages. As they shouldn't in my view. Helping users with individual problems is automatic.

"Members that are populair on the boards, help other members well, etc are in my eyes the members that deserve a high rank."

I agree to dissagree on this. I can understand that you see position within the nf "community" as the prime factor. however I would prefer a ranking system based as a reflection of knowledge acquired, not socialising in fora (and what about the irc channel...)

Hmz, I should really implement UBB and a Reply-button here :P

Rhican, can you start a forum thread (in the 'General' forum) about this subject? It is an interesting subject, but maybe slightly off-topic and discussing without proper quoting and replying here sucks.

rhican on 10 January 2005 13:55

sure as long as you promise not to rank me on it ;-)
